How you can Join
If you're in high school, now is a great time to learn about Air Force ROTC and the opportunities it offers.
High School Seniors
AFROTC scholarship applications open the summer before your senior year and are accepted from July 15 through December 31.
The application process includes:
- Submitting test scores and transcripts
- Completing an interview with a local AFROTC detachment
Visit the Scholarships page for details about eligibility, benefits, and how to apply.
Missed the Scholarship Deadline?
That's okay! You do not need a scholarship to join Air Force ROTC.
If you plan to attend the University of Minnesota, simply register for AFROTC classes in the fall. There is no separate application to join, and any student who meets the minimum eligibility requirements may participate. You can also compete for scholarships after starting college.
Visit the College Students page for information on which classes to register for.
Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors
It's never too early to prepare for AFROTC.
The Air Force values leadership, teamwork, and involvement. Build your experience by:
- Leading a school club or organization
- Serving as a team captain
- Organizing community service projects
- Participating in scouting or similar leadership programs
Strong leadership experience will make you a more competitive applicant for AFROTC scholarships and officer candidate programs.
Incoming Freshmen
- Simply register for our classes. There is no additional cost beyond your regular tuition, and there is no military obligation for trying the program.
- Students may also become eligible for Air Force ROTC scholarships after enrolling.
Ready to join? Register for AIR 1000 and AIR 1104 through MyU.
Current Freshmen
- It's not too late to join.
- Students may be able to join during the semester with a permission number OR enroll at the start of the spring term.
Sophomores
- Students with at least three years remaining before graduation can still join AFROTC as sophomores.
- New cadets typically enroll in both freshman- and sophomore-level Aerospace Studies courses, which only adds one additional hour of class each week.
Juniors
- In some cases, juniors may still be eligible to join AFROTC. This is most common for students in approved five-year degree programs or those planning to pursue graduate studies. Contact us or visit the Armory to discuss your eligibility and options.
Law Students
- University of Minnesota Law School students may be eligible for programs such as the Graduate Law Program or the One-Year Commissioning Program.
- Applications are typically submitted during the first or second year of law school. If selected, students complete AFROTC requirements during their remaining years of study and commission as Air Force officers upon graduation.
- Because these programs are highly competitive, interested students should contact us as early as possible.
Air Force ROTC provides several programs in more than 1,100 schools to encourage the best of the best to become Officers in the U.S. Air Force.
